The Road #11 - It’s OK Things Get Out of Hand Sometimes
Wanting to control the uncontrollable is the beginning of losing control.
Since I've being diagnosed with generalized anxiety disorder 6 years ago, right after my worst attack so far, I've always tried to control everything around me. This includes how I think, act, react to situations, and even how I breathe. However, this gave me a false sense of control. When things inevitably happened outside of what I expected, I ended up blaming myself, getting stressed, and even experiencing more anxiety attacks.
After a few years, I realized that being afraid of losing control prevented me from being prepared for changes. Since then, I have learned to release control at certain times to embrace chaos. Everyone is subject to making mistakes, and sometimes it is necessary to lose control so that we can recover it with more wisdom and preparation. It's okay to let go.
So the next time something gets out of hand, don't panic. Take a breath and remember: you can't control the things that happen to you, the only thing you can control is how you react to them.
